Communalization as a strategy for socio-ecological transformation: An introduction

Communalization aims to decouple the production of goods and services from profit and capital interests and place them under democratic control. Recently, the discourse on this topic has increased significantly, especially through the Deutsche Wohnen & Co. enteignen (DWE) campaign. Many see the communalization of economic sectors as a promising strategy for a needs-based, democratic, socially just and ecologically sustainable transformation of supply systems. Our workshop offers an introduction to the concept of communalization and discusses fundamental questions such as the differences to nationalization and the role of democratization. Using concrete examples such as DWE, Lucas Aerospace and GKN, we will examine the potentials and challenges of communalization for socio-ecological transformations.
