Land conflicts in the Global South
The workshop will look at specific land conflicts in the Global South in order to highlight some of the interdependencies of resource extraction and losses and damages with regard to the climate crisis. In particular the rampant commodification of land with its accompanied destruction of ecosystems and the oft-violent displacement of people is at the core of a dynamic that leads to losses and damages on top of it. It is argued that the struggles over regaining access to land for the many and a democratization of land access (and stewardship by indigenous peoples over their territories) will be key if ecocide is to be stopped. The participants will reflect on what role civil society can and should take on in the Global North.
